How to Back Up Your Game Saves and Use Cloud Saves Safely

Few things in gaming are as frustrating as losing a save file after dozens or hundreds of hours of progress. A failed drive, a corrupted update, a lost phone or an accidental deletion can erase it in seconds. The good news is that protecting your saves takes only a few minutes, and the right approach depends on the device you play on.

Understand where your saves actually live

Games store progress in several different places. Some keep saves in a folder on your computer. Some store them on a platform's servers and keep only a local copy. Others save to the console's internal storage. A few use a mixture, for example cloud saves for progress but local files for settings. Knowing which type your game uses tells you what needs backing up.

On PC

Many PC platforms offer automatic cloud saving for supported games, and it is usually enabled by default in the client's settings. Check each game's store page, which normally indicates whether cloud saves are supported. For games without cloud support, saves are typically found in your user folder, often under Documents, Saved Games or the application data directory. The PCGamingWiki website lists save locations for thousands of games.

To back up manually, copy the save folder to an external drive or a cloud storage service. Do this before installing major patches or mods, since updates and modifications are common causes of corruption. Keep more than one version, such as a dated copy, so that if the newest file is damaged you can return to an earlier one.

On consoles

Consoles generally offer two options: cloud storage through the platform's subscription service, and manual copying to external storage. Cloud backup is convenient and automatic when switched on, but it often requires an active subscription, and if the subscription lapses you may lose access to uploaded saves after a period of time. Check the terms in your account settings rather than assuming. Some games do not allow their saves to be copied, or tie them to the account, so look at the game's support page.

On phones and tablets

Mobile games commonly save progress to an account, such as a social login, a game-specific account or the platform's own game services. The most reliable step is to link your progress to an account inside the game's settings before you change phones or reinstall. Without a linked account, progress stored only on the device can disappear with a factory reset or a lost phone. Device backups sometimes include game data, but not always, so do not rely on them alone.

Good habits for every platform

Make your own backup before updates, major story decisions that cannot be undone, or experiments with modifications. Keep an eye on the cloud sync status; a sync conflict message appears when the local and online versions differ, and choosing the wrong one can overwrite newer progress. Read the prompt carefully and, if unsure, back up both versions before choosing. Avoid unofficial save editors and downloads from unknown websites, which can contain malware or cause bans in online games.

Restoring a save

To restore, close the game, put the backed-up files back in their original location and start the game. Make sure the game is not set to immediately sync and overwrite the restored file with the cloud copy; temporarily turning off cloud sync for that title can prevent this. Test that your progress loaded correctly before you continue playing.

A five-minute backup routine is enough to avoid most disasters. Learn where your favorite game keeps its saves, copy them occasionally, and link your mobile progress to an account, and a broken device will cost you time rather than your progress.
